Community Engagement Studios Announcement & Application
GOALS & OBJECTIVES
The mission of CHECK-UP is to establish an infrastructure to facilitate academic-community research collaborations and partnerships. One way of bringing together the often-siloed groups is through Community Engagement Studios (CES).
The overall goals of the CHECK-UP CES are to:
-
Establish and strengthen partnerships between researchers and relevant communities of interest;
-
Foster collaborations among partners to address key health inequities in urban populations;
-
Build the capacity of researchers to meaningfully involve interested community members in medical and behavioral investigations; and
-
Enhance the impact of research on health equity.
STAKEHOLDERS
Who is Involved?
Researchers can enhance their research projects, protocols, and proposals by receiving feedback from a variety of experts outside of their discipline who have a stake in the outcomes of the research. We define individuals who will be involved in this process to be:
Community Experts: Community experts in the CE Studio process include community residents, patients, providers, advocates, caregivers, and others who have relevant expertise and lived experience on the topic.
Academic Experts: Individuals who are conducting research at any stage in their career including tenured and non-tenure track researchers, clinicians, pre- and post-doctoral students, fellows or instructors who are seeking community input on course design and involvement.
CE Studio Team & Facilitators: CHECK-UP staff and faculty will be involved throughout the process from application to evaluation and report-back
The CE Studio is an interactive, structured forum that will allow researchers to meet with a panel of at least six individuals who have been trained in research methods and community engaged research including those who have been a part of CHECK-UP’s Community Health Scholars Program for example.
The panel will be made up of individuals with lived experience and a background in topics including:

Process: What is Involved?
Researchers will prepare a presentation to summarize their research project, aims, and methods to the CE Studio panel and receive feedback on research protocols from conception to recruitment and interpretation to reporting the results back to the community. This process will ensure the study is culturally sensitized and relevant to the community of interest, communicated in a way that is understandable and actionable, and ultimately more impactful. CE Studios will be coordinated and involve CHECK-UP staff and faculty for session that will:
-
Take place in person
-
Last between two to three hours
-
Include refreshments, space, and parking
-
Include at least six panelists who will receive compensation
-
Include an evaluation component and summary report
-
